Analyse des risques pour les mammifères marins liés à l'emploi des méthodes acoustiques en océanographie ArchiMer
Lurton, Xavier; Antoine, Loic.
The use of acoustical systems in various human activities in the ocean (industry, defence, science) raises the issue of their impact upon marine mammals populations. Several serious accidents linked to the use of naval sonars led the military, industrial and scientific communities to investigate the potential dangers of their own activity. This report aims at identifying the risks for the cetaceans linked to the use of acoustic and seismic systems currently used for oceanographic science. The analysis proposed here stays within the frame of bibliography synthesis and elementary modelling, and brings no new scientific elements on the topic. An overview of the status of cetacean populations is given first, with a summary of the possible acoustical...

First confirmed record of Feresa attenuata (Delphinidae) for the Northern Brazilian Coast Biota Neotropica
Magalhães,Fagner Augusto de; Garri,Rosana Griselda; Tosi,Carolina Herédia; Siciliano,Salvatore; Chellappa,Sathyabama; Silva,Flavio José de Llima.
In Brazil only one confirmed stranding is known from an emaciated specimen collected along the southeastern coast. The aim of this work is to report a recent record of a pygmy killer whale from the coast of Maranhão State, northern Brazil. On 22 October 2005, through regular surveys conducted by Projeto Cetáceos do Maranhão team, a beach-worn skull of a pygmy killer whale was found on the Mangue Seco beach, at Caju Island, Maranhão State. The specimen was identified through peculiar features, such as a short beak, 11 teeth per row in the maxile and the distance between the anterorbital notch and the end of the toothrow. This stranding suggests that pygmy killer whales may use oceanic waters close to Maranhão continental shelf. This is the second confirmed...

Gastric lesions associated with the presence of Anisakis spp. Dujardin, 1845 (Nematoda: Anisakidae) in Cetaceans stranded on the coast of Ceara, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Motta,Monica Regina Alves; Pinheiro,Diana Célia Sousa Nunes; Carvalho,Vitor Luz; Viana,Daniel de Araújo; Vicente,Ana Carolina Paulo; Iñiguez,Alena Mayo.
The gastric compartments of ten cetaceans stranded on the coast of Ceará State, Northeast Brazil were analyzed in this study. Gastric Anisakis spp. was diagnosed in all individuals involved in this study. Parasites and tissue samples were collected during necropsy. The presence of Anisakis parasites showed similar distribution across the three gastric compartments and the majority was free within the gastric lumen. Macroscopically, the lesions were predominantly characterized by the presence of ulcers (60%, 6/10) within the gastric mucosa, occasionally associated with edema and hemorrhage (30%, 3/10). Eight cetaceans (8/10 - 80%) presented gastric microscopic alterations and in 75% (6/8) of these animals, chronic lymphoplasmocytic gastritis was observed...

Marine mammal strandings: technical control on site OMA
Tavernier, J..
Strandings of marine mammals are always an unusual occurrence. Whether the animals are living or dead, these events require the input of many services and people. Techniques can be implemented to protect the animals, stabilise them, transport them, or -when they are dead- dispose of them properly. Technical coordination on the beach is therefore an important factor for success. The paper examines the various possible types of strandings and the different methods of intervention.

New record of a stranded sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) and a review of strandings along the continental Argentine coast Mastozool. neotrop.
Degrati,Mariana; García,Néstor A.; Grandi,M. Florencia; Leonardi,M. Soledad; Loizaga de Castro,Rocío; Vales,Damián G.; Dans,Silvana L.; Pedraza,Susana N.; Crespo,Enrique A..
We present a new record of sperm whale with notes on diet, age determination and a review of strandings along the continental Argentine coast. A complete necropsy was made in the field, and morphometric data were taken. The specimen stranded was a mature male of 64+ years old. This is the oldest specimen determined for a sperm whale in the Southwest Atlantic coast. In the stomach contents a total of 302 cephalopod lower beaks were recovered. Cestodes were present in the blubber but parasites were not found in stomach and intestine contents.

Patterns of organic contaminants in marine mammals with reference to sperm whale strandings OMA
Wells, D.E.; McKenzie, C.; Ross, H.M..
Discriminant analysis has been applied to organochlorine contaminant data from a small number (<i>ca</i> 3-25) of 12 different marine mammal species to discriminate between the species on the basis of the chlorobiphenyls (CB) patterns in blubber and account for the effects of age, sex, condition and location of the mammals. The raw data are normalised to a single congener, CB 153, to reduce the effects of life history and sex, after which the discriminant factors are plotted to display the differences between species in relation to the intake and the metabolism of chlorobiphenyls. An understanding of these differences gives a better knowledge of the relative sensibility of these species. The sperm whales were found to have the least ability to...

Science and conservation in whale strandings: the role of the public authorities OMA
Jacques, T..
Whale strandings convey a great deal of information on the complex factors that affect the survival of cetacean species. International law protects cetaceans, and governments have committed themselves to conserve populations, to support research and to organise the scientific response to stranding events. In Belgium, a number of research units, public services and volunteers have been organized into an intervention network to deal with stranded animals. The practical difficulties are many and can only be overcome through good co-ordination, rapid response and full co-operation of experts in various fields. Though much progress has been achieved in the right direction, many problems remain to be solved. As was made obvious with the stranding of four sperm...

The work of the media in whale strandings OMA
Noël, L..
The stranding of sperm whales at the Belgian coast in November 1994 attracted the general attention of the media. Excessive shows of passion often encountered in other parts of the world when cetaceans die, were not observed. An examination of the articles which appeared in the press shows that the event was merely treated as a major, but common news item. Priority was given to the daily developments. The work of the authorities and that of the scientists were given similar status as the anecdotic aspects. The importance given to controversies regarding the management of the situation must be stressed. The media did not go deeply into the biology of sperm whales, the stranding that occurred abroad, or the various hypotheses that were discussed. How could...
